How to Choose the Right Dog Collar Size: XS to XL Measuring Guide

September 27, 2026

A personalized collar only works well when the fit is right. Before choosing a color or set, start with the measurement that matters most: your pet’s neck.

Measure before choosing a size

Use a soft measuring tape around the place where the collar normally sits. Keep the tape comfortably close to the neck rather than pulling it tight. If your pet already has a collar that fits well, measuring that collar can also give you a useful reference.

For our Personalized Floral Dog Collar, Harness & Leash Set, the available collar ranges are:

  • XS: 20–31 cm / 7.87–12.21 in
  • S: 22–32 cm / 8.66–12.60 in
  • M: 27–41 cm / 10.63–16.14 in
  • L: 33–52 cm / 12.99–20.47 in
  • XL: 37–60 cm / 14.57–23.62 in

Do not choose by breed name alone

Two dogs of the same breed can have different neck measurements, and coat thickness can change the fit too. Breed examples can be useful as a rough starting point, but the actual measurement should make the final decision.

What if the measurement overlaps two sizes?

Several of our adjustment ranges overlap. That is useful because it gives you room to choose based on where your pet’s measurement falls within the range. In general, avoid placing the measurement right at an extreme end when another size gives more comfortable adjustment room.

Small pets and cats

For a small pet, including a cat, use the same measurement-first approach rather than assuming a size from species alone. XS begins at 20 cm, but suitability depends on the individual pet and how the product will be used. This collar is not described as a breakaway safety collar, so cat owners who specifically require a breakaway design should choose a product made for that purpose.

Measure again before personalization

Because the bone-shaped buckle can be personalized with a pet name and phone number, it is worth checking the size and engraving details twice before ordering. A few extra minutes before checkout can prevent the most common fit and personalization mistakes.

Once the size is clear, you can compare all 28 patterns and five set combinations on the product page. If you need help before ordering, contact Evervain Studio.
