How to Measure a Dog for a Collar When Two Sizes Overlap

September 29, 2026

Dog collar size charts often overlap. That is normal for adjustable collars, but it can leave you wondering which size to choose when one neck measurement appears in two or even three ranges.

For our personalized collar set, the current ranges are XS 20–31 cm, S 22–32 cm, M 27–41 cm, L 33–52 cm and XL 37–60 cm.

Measure where the collar actually sits

Use a flexible measuring tape around your pet’s neck in the normal collar position. Keep it comfortably close rather than pulling it tight, and record the number before looking at size letters.

Why neighboring sizes overlap

Each collar adjusts across a range. If your measurement falls near the top of one range and inside the next range too, both may technically cover the number but place the adjustment at different points.

Use the range, not the breed name

Two dogs of the same breed can have different neck measurements because of age, build and individual variation. The measured neck is the more useful starting point.

When you are near an edge

If the measurement sits very close to the maximum of one size, compare the next size rather than automatically choosing the smallest option that technically fits. If it sits nearer the middle of a range, you generally have more adjustment room in both directions.
