A close face portrait usually gives the most detail, especially for eyes, ears and expression. A full-body photo can work when posture or markings are an important part of how you recognize the pet.

If the pet becomes very small in the image, detail is lost quickly. When in doubt, crop closer rather than leaving lots of empty background.
